4. Improvement of radiotherapy by
using radiomitigators
Different from radioprotectors,
which need to be administered either before or during radiotherapy,
radiomitigators can be administered after radiation treatment. Radiomitigation
can also be very useful in term of national defense with the increasing global threat of terrorists, such as potential radiological attack by
dirty bombs.
Currently, there is not an FDA
approved radiomitigator. However, there are a number of drug candidates under
investigation as radiomitigator.
