Novel/Unconventional Methods for Cancer Treatment (1)

In addition to the three classic/conventional methods of cancer treatment mentioned before, there are some novel and/or unconventional methods for cancer treatment that are worth mentioning. Some of these methods are being used, although not widely available, and some are still under clinical development and not yet available. Examples of these novel and/or unconventional methods as well as some novel strategies of cancer drugs are briefly described below.

1. Using Electromagnetic Waves to Treat Cancer

Electronic devices that emit some form of electromagnetic waves have been investigated for cancer treatment for a few years. Although there are a number of electronic devices under development as potential devices for cancer treatment, there is only one device recently approved by the FDA for brain tumor treatment. The device is called Optune (by Novacure), which includes a portable electric field generator, transducer arrays, and rechargeable batteries. The device works by creating alternating wave-like electric fields which interact with the dividing cancer cells, therefore, slow down the multiplication of cancer cells.

Clinical studies showed that, when used in combination with temozolomide (the most prescribed brain cancer drug), Optune was effective in treating glioblastoma (brain cancer) and significantly extended patients’ lives.

Anecdotal Stories about Cancer (1)

From time to time, almost everyone hears or reads about some anecdotal stories about some cancer patients getting cured by unconventional, unusual, or even strange methods.  Although anecdotal and not scientifically sound, some of the stories may actually seem interesting or believable.  Let’s look at some anecdotal stories in a general way.

Anecdotal story one

Someone with cancer was declared hopeless and was not expected to live for more than a few months.  The patient’s physicians gave up all conventional methods, declared that nothing further can be done, and left the patient alone.  Out of desperation, the patient went to an isolated/remote area to live alone, almost totally isolated from ordinary human society.  Further, the patient went on a strict diet, not eating processed food and eating just enough food, especially un-processed food, to survive.  A few months later, the patient was cancer free and became a healthy person.

Ganoderma lucidum
Ganoderma lucidum (Reishi mushroom) is a group of mushrooms extensively used in traditional Chinese medicines.  Its Chinese name, Ling Zhi, means spiritual/wonderful plant.  Reishi mushrooms contain many bioactive compounds, such as triterpenoids and polysaccharides.  They are being studied for many different therapeutic purposes including immunomodulation, antioxidant, and anticancer effects.  Some studies showed that ganoderma lucidum suppressed cell adhesion and cell migration of breast and prostate cancer cells and may have potential anticancer effect.
